Jadwiga and Wiktoria offer a contemporary approach to the traditional craft of weaving kilims and rugs. From their joint workshop in Lodz, named ‘tartaruga’ which means turtle in Italian, they patiently prepare their professional looms and follow a slow weaving process which uses sustainable or recycled materials. It can take up to two weeks to create a single kilim or rug. They source their colours from natural dyes, such as avocado, madder root and chokeberry. The creative duo met in the faculty of material technologies and textile design at Lodz University of Technology. As students, they entered the Art_Inkubator competition and won which enabled them to open their workshop. They design their rugs together using crayons and cut outs until they settle on an idea they both like.
