Artesol is a Brazilian organisation that protects traditional handicrafts by encouraging the socio-cultural and economic development of Brazilian artisans. Founded in 1998 by anthropologist Ruth Cardoso, Artesol has developed over a hundred projects across 24 states, including political advocacy, formation of associations, group training, research, exhibitions, documentaries, and technological advancements for handicrafts. A highlight is the creation of Rede Artesol, the first platform to map Brazilian handicrafts, connecting artisans with the public. All their projects focus on the vitality of intangible and tangible heritage. Internationally recognized for its advocacy of fair trade, Artesol is the first craft-related organisation to become a member of the World Fair Trade Organization. Since 2010, UNESCO has acknowledged its contribution to the safeguarding of cultural heritage.
