In the wake of temporary closures of their premises, museums, homes to impressive art and craft collections, have come up with creative digital solutions for ways to continue to bring the culture of art and craftsmanship to an online audience. The result is an exciting array of online initiatives from virtual museum tours and exhibitions to live talks and crafting demos all at our fingertips, available to enjoy from the safe haven of our homes. Below is a roundup of the online initiatives recently launched by a selection of our network members.
Museum Ariana, Geneva
Museum Ariana has launched a series of initiatives. It’s first is #ensembleàlamaison which shares creative crafting ideas for families to enjoy at home, such as origami, table decoration and bread making. Keeping to the theme of ceramics and the kitchen, each week the museum shares a recipe linked to one of its collection objects. The museum is also running a video series called #museechezvous.
Benaki Museum, Athens
Benaki Museum has introduced the initiative #museumfromhome with virtual tours of the museum galleries accompanied by audio commentary in six different language options. In addition, they have made their collection catalogues available online for visitors to browse hundreds of historical artworks.
The Crafts Council, London
The Crafts Council has created an edit of virtual art and craft exhibitions taking place around the globe while we are in isolation. An essential guide to the online activities of the United Kingdom’s best craft galleries as well as some further afield.
Triennale, Milan
Milan’s foremost design museum has launched Decameron: streaming stories, an initiative which invites important figures in the arts into their empty exhibition spaces to share their unique insights with a live streaming on Instagram at 17:00 daily. Additionally on their website, visitors can discover interviews, videos and images from the archives of the Triennale.
Museum of Applied Arts (MAK), Vienna
MAK has introduced a virtual programme to allow visitors to continue to discover the museum and its collections. A virtual tour of the museum can be taken courtesy of Google Arts & Culture, whilst an app launched by the museum allows visitors to browse permanent collections with audio commentaries from its curators and restorers.
The Vitromusée Romont
The Vitromusée Romont has launched a video series which allows visitors to view exhibitions virtually. The first exhibition of the series Création féminine is dedicated to female creativity in reverse glass art, showcasing the artwork of a selection of women stain glass painters, from the 18th to the 21st centuries.
