A Contemporary Take on a Precious Heritage

From 26 August to 2 September, 25 young artisans and designers from nine European countries studied tapestry making in Aubusson at the world-renowned centre for carpet and tapestry making that dates to the 16th century. They explored artistic interpretation and the use of tapestry-making techniques in disciplines such as design and architecture. Under the guidance of master weaver Christian Blanchon, they collaborated on a large-scale tapestry inspired by Swiss artist Elsi Giauque that reinterpreted the four elements in the context of climate change. Students described their time as “magical”, “complex”, and “a fairy tale”.

Hear from the students about their experience in Aubusson.

The course was part of the Michelangelo Foundation’s Summer School programme and was developed in partnership with Cité internationale de la tapisserie, the museum and training centre in Aubusson, France.
