A BEACON FOR FINE CRAFTSMANSHIP

by Franco Cologni

My heartfelt thoughts turn to Venice in the wake of the recent damage caused by the high tides, city of the Foundation’s heart, home to Homo Faber and many cherished artisans. The Michelangelo Foundation has pledged to participate in the Support Venice campaign launched by Venetian Heritage, which aims to restore the impacted Venetian patrimony - artistic and cultural heritage and architectural treasures, it is through the savoir-faire of skilled artisans that restoration projects can be carried out so that the rich artistic legacy of Venice is preserved for the future.

GENEVA AND
THE MÉTIERS D’ART

The new address on Pont de la Machine represents a contemporary hub for the world of métiers d’art in the heart of Geneva’s historical centre, home to a rich heritage of craftsmanship.

In the 18th Century Geneva became a centre for the artisanal manufacture of printed cotton textiles called ‘indiennes’, learning the age-old techniques of printing and dying from Indian artisans, the transfer of knowledge and technology between India and Europe, enabled the new textile business to thrive in Geneva. Cottons printed with brightly coloured patterns were unusual, even fascinating to people in early modern Europe. These textile factories were situated on the water’s edge so they could rinse the cotton.

DID YOU KNOW?

The bridge itself is a work of art, which required a team of skilled craftsmen to construct it, using a technique similar to that used to build the Eiffel Tower. The rivets were skillfully handcrafted in workshops, using hot furnaces to melt the metal and implement the necessary joinery.

The name Pont de la Machine originates from its initial purpose as a water pumping station, named the ‘Machine Abeille’, it was installed to provide the luxury of running water to the elite members of society. It remained in service until 1843, which is when the bridge was first built in wood and then later transformed into a work of art in 1884 and 1887 with the addition of cast iron.

YOUNG AMBASSADORS

Young Ambassadors Slovakian designer Juraj Horňák and Danish ceramicist Maja Højgaard won a contest launched by Michelangelo Foundation on Instagram to co-create a funded project. The final result is a unique object which now takes pride of place in our office. The concept was to explore connection. By using an abstract physical form, they present their collective outlook on the multi-layered and paradoxical nature of human connection.
